Craigdarroch Castle in 21 Treasures

Apr 15, 2024

Craigdarroch Castle in 21 Treasures is a fascinating look at the Castle’s collection, featuring beautiful colour photographs, in which author, Moira Dann presents an overview of Craigdarroch Castle’s many stories, beyond that of the “bonanza” castle built by coal baron and shipping magnate Robert Dunsmuir for his family. The Castle has also served as a military hospital after the First World War, a home for the University of Victoria’s predecessor Victoria College, the offices of the Victoria School Board, and the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Craigdarroch Castle is currently the museum and heritage site that houses and explores the stories provided by the artifacts in its collection. Craigdarroch Castle in 21 Treasures is published by Touchwood Editions.

An Evening with Moira Dann, author of Craigdarroch Castle in 21 Treasures

“Craigdarroch Castle in 21 Treasures is a beautiful volume of introductions and connections: Moira gives readers a taste of our vast collection by introducing Castle artifacts and the stories they tell, and connects each treasure to Castle life and to the reader’s curiosity,” said Craigdarroch Castle Executive Director, John Hughes.

Moira Dann is the current Craigdarroch Castle Board President, she is a journalist by trade (stints with both CBC and the Globe and Mail) and a history enthusiast by inclination (to earn an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from King’s College in 2016, she wrote a book about the Mothers of Confederation). She currently works as Communications Manager at the James Bay Community Project and will start an MA in Public History at the University of Victoria in September.
